The ultimate goal of the SBCS program is to encourage and nurture the first stages of the student’s journey of faith. SBCS strives to challenge the student to develop an everlasting and deepening awareness of God through experience, education, and service.

Quarterly Themes

As an extension of our Catholic identity, we emphasize a key theme each quarter. For 2006-2007, these themes are: positive attitude, respect, self-discipline, and responsibility. We bring these values to life through a variety of methods, including: teacher modeling, thematic prayer services, related activities, speakers, and service projects. Our goal is for our students to understand the true meaning of these values, be able to recognize these values in action, and to choose to live by them.

Daily Religious Instruction
Our religion series, Faith First, is published by Resources for Christian Living. This "spiral based" curriculum covers the core values of our faith at each grade level.  Promise Magazine is used in kindergarten and first grades to supplement the curriculum. Grades are earned based on class participation and retention of subject matter taught. Though sacramental preparation and celebration occur at the students’ home parishes, the sacraments are studied in every grade level.

Results from the standardized ACRE test are analyzed and used by the CRE and religion teachers to refine their teaching methodology and thereby enhance student understanding of our Catholic faith.

In addition to daily religious instruction, care is taken to integrate the Catholic Church’s teachings and beliefs into the other areas of the curriculum.

Liturgy/Prayer Services
School services are typically held on Thursdays at 9:30 AM.  Students attend mass at least twice a month and also participate in prayer services in the individual classrooms. Students are encouraged to share their gifts during services as readers, prayer leaders, servers, singers and musicians.

Regular Prayer
Prayer is celebrated throughout the school day.  Each day begins with student- led scripture readings and ends with administrator- led prayer. Students compose and share prayers in various forms as part of the religion curriculum.

Christian Service
Service and giving are synonymous with the SBCS community. Following the example set by Jesus, all students are encouraged to develop a charitable and serving way of life by performing community service and conducting collections to help those less fortunate. Wherever possible, assistance is provided to the local or parish communities so that students can form a personal bond with those in need. School-wide projects include collections for food pantries and Christmas gifts for needy children. In addition, each grade level creates their own project.

Christian Student Award
This award is presented each quarter to a student in each homeroom, kindergarten through eighth grade, who exemplifies the teachings of Christ in the SBCS community. A student is eligible to receive the Christian Student Award once per school year.

Sacramental Preparation
Each parish in our consolidation instructs and prepares their parish children for First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Sacraments are discussed in each grade level with increasing depth of knowledge - but the actual preparation and reception of the sacrament takes place in the students' home parishes.

Character Development
Through a variety of in-school programs, we educate the character of our students.

  • "Everybody Counts" develops appreciation and respect for persons with disabilities.
  • "In Control" promotes chastity to our middle schoolers.
  • Our Bullying Prevention program cultivates compassion, self-esteem, and respect for others.
  • DARE educates students about the dangers of substance abuse and encourages fortitude.

Additional programs foster cultural awareness and the cultivation of Christian values.
